The Sporting Upper Limb: Clinical Decision Making & Planning Strategies

Clinical Decision Making & Planning Strategies:

Mer

Every day we take clinical decisions on the upper extremity in the sporting context, however, the outcome is not always as intended. In our approach toward diagnosis do we understand all the potential structures which could be implicit? Beyond diagnosis do we understand the function and how we can objectify functional tests to support the diagnosis but also improve prognosis? Do we follow a reasoned approach towards assessment that allows us to better maximize our understanding of both the abilities and inabilities of the athlete? Do we appreciate the difference between qualitative and quantitative tests? Lots of things to consider, however, we have considered simplifying things in this presentation to enhance both assessment and treatment considerations. We will discuss the return to play continuum and the importance of ensuring appropriate planning strategies. We will also outline what athlete readiness means for a safe and effective return post-injury.

The learning points from this presentation are aimed at:

-Enhancing your clinical decision making for both assessment & treatment options

-Improve the prognostic value of your approach in the presence or absence of a diagnosis

-Include planning as part of your overall strategy
