Principles and Practice of Strength and Power Training

Mer

In this lecture we discuss strength and power training and, in particular, the mechanics that underpin these. An understanding of these mechanics, which include force, rate of force development (RFD), and impulse, will enable us to design and defend effective training programmes that enhance athletic performance.

Following this presentation, you will be able to:

  1. Define fundamental mechanical principles.
  2. Describe and interpret force-time and force-velocity curves.
  3. Explain the different tests used to measure an athlete's RFD and “explosive” strength.
  4. Determine if an athlete should emphasise strength training or power training.
  5. Understand how to programme for an athlete aiming to improve sports performance and athletic motor skills.
